The Big Apple

Despite what he says on his blog, Shawn treated me to a weekend in New York for my birthday this year. Despite the hot weather, we had a good time wandering around downtown neighborhoods and ducking into coffee shops to cool down.

We got in too late on Friday night to do much other than look for a midnight snack to tide us over. You'd think that it would have been easy -- after all, New York is the city that never sleeps. Our hotel, however, was way downtown, across from Ground Zero and in the heart of the city's financial district. If we'd wanted an expense account lunch, no problem. Late night, however, our choices were slices and subs. Not a bad choice, but not exactly the 24-hour Greek diner we'd have found in a more residential neighborhood.

Saturday, we started the day by going up to Union Square for breakfast at a Brazilian cafe that we'd been in once before. Shawn was pleased to find the same crowd of up-and-coming actresses and models still waiting on tables there! Outside the restaurant, we stopped at the Greenmarket, where I caught up with a couple old friends who sell their farm goods at the market. From there, we made our way back downtown by way of Soho, Greenwich Village, and Tribeca.

We went to dinner at a nouveau Asian restaurant in Chelsea called Saba. Based on the perfectly prepared striped bass and the yummy Korean barbeque, we'd recommend the restaurant to anyone who asked! Afterward, we caught Clark Terry's Big Band at the Blue Note. Clark Terry is the real deal -- he's played trumpet with everyone from Duke Ellington to Doc Severinson and back again. One of Daniel's friends from UT plays third trombone in the band. It was fun to be at one of the most famous jazz clubs in the world and see someone we knew from Knoxville!

I was not the only birthday girl at the Blue Note. At one point, Mr. Terry interrupted his show to sing Happy Birthday to Tony Bennett who was at the best table in the house. He did not get up and sing, but acknowledged the attention and well wishes of the crowd like an old pro.

Sunday was uptown day for us. We took the train to the Upper West Side and had brunch at Isabella's, one of the most reliable places in the city. Though we were just across the street from the Museum of Natural History, we passed up dinosaur bones and the planetarium for the Columbus Avenue flea market on the other side of the street. Shawn bought me a treasure from a woman who just knew he had to be from out of town -- "There just aren't any big blond men in New York," she told him.

On the way back to the hotel, we stopped at Crumbs Bake Shop for another cup of coffee (iced for me) and a chocolate cupcake (no candles). We read someone's abandoned Sunday Times and commented that a city weekend couldn't get much better than ours!

Rockfish

Shawn tells the whole story of this rockfish over on Chesapeake Life. I was just there to record the moment for posterity!

Supper Club

I hosted supper club at the house last night. In addition to six women and three men, there were seven kids (all under the age of seven) running around the yard and splashing in the water at the beach next door. If their reaction was any indication, I think we'll see all of them out here again before the summer is over!

Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures. I went to the vault for this one, however, taken the last time we had supper club on the water. This was six years ago -- before any of the kids were born! -- at Jennifer Charlton's grandmother's house on the Miles River in St. Michaels. I think we've all held up pretty well!

There is only ONE reason....

.... Shawn would stand on the Capitol steps in the blazing summer sun in a suit & tie!

Thus making good on a "campaign promise" I made during our engagement!

Finally! A haircut that will stand up to my top-down commute!

Snapped yesterday afternoon with my little camera phone in the Randolph Cree salon on Capitol Hill. Thanks Evan!

Closer to Fine

When I lived in Tennessee, one of the things I missed the most about living in Washington was Wolf Trap in the summer. Knoxville had a pretty good music scene, between Sundown in the City and the Tennessee Theater (and of course, the local bluegrass bar scene!), but there's nothing quite like a national park dedicated to the performing arts.

Until last night, I hadn't been to Wolf Trap since we moved back. Thanks to Kathy Gorman for treating me to an early birthday present of a concert and dinner on the lawn. You can't tell from this sad cell phone picture, but those are the Indigo Girls on stage. It was a great show, a nice mix of old favorites and new stuff from their upcoming record. Based on what we heard, we can't wait til the September release date!

Bastille Day in America

Shawn surprised me at my office yesterday afternoon, popping in unannounced at the end of the day. We decided to celebrate the anniversary of the French Revolution with a bottle of Sancerre and dinner at my favorite bistro Français, the Restaurante Montmartre in Eastern Market.

Though his hanger steak (bifteck onglet) was excellent, it was my perfectly prepared red snapper (poisson rouge?) that put Shawn in the mood to go fishing -- so much for storming the prison gates and beheading the Queen!

We settled in at the end of the dock, me with a magazine and him with his fishing gear, for the rest of the evening. When Shawn started reeling 'em in, James and Lillian came out to see what all the fuss was about. Neither cat is very curious about live fish; I guess they'd much rather get their food from a can.

Shawn had a good night-- he hauled in one perch that was picture-worthy, but it flopped off the dock before I could get a shot of it (it was a BIG one, honest!!). Instead, I'm sharing shots of his first eel and his ten-thousandth catfish.

Le roi est mort -- vive la France!!

New Sister Picture

It's time to replace the "sister picture" I've had on display since July 1999, taken in Suzi's back yard right before Judy moved to California. I missed my chance to get a picture of the four of us when we were all home over the Fourth of July. But browsing through my photo library, I found these pictures taken last summer at Dann & Lisa Wollet's annual "Ham Jam." I can't decide which one I like best!

Make Way for Ducklings!

We've been watching a pair of Mallards, whom we've named Larry and Larryette, since we moved in to the house. It's not hard, as they've taken up residence on our dock and in the marsh grasses at the Shore Acres Neighborhood Association park next door.

We were thrilled when we noticed the other day that their family has expanded to include eight ducklings. I don't think I have to worry about James and Lillian, as Larryette is a very protective mother and her brood are already excellent swimmers!

What I wish our yard looked like....

St. Michaels, Fourth of July

We took the boat to St. Michaels, a water town on the Eastern Shore, on July 4. It took a little more than an hour to get there, cutting through Kent Narrows, about the same time it would have taken if we'd gone by car.

It was hot!

We grabbed lunch at a local seafood house (what else?) and had fun ducking in and out of the little shops on Main Street to cool down.

We hit some weather on our way back to Arnold, when we ran into a pretty big thunderstorm that swept through the area. Thank goodness we had our NOAA weather radio on, and were able to get to Kent Island and take shelter while the storm passed. Be sure to check out Shawn's blog for some of those pictures!

Mom & Milty

Second Annual Miller Time Pool Party

At Bill & Lee Miller's home in Swanton, Ohio.

EVERYONE was there this year, including my cousins, Martin & Susan Miller from Fairbanks, Alaska.

If you're ever in Fairbanks, you should look Martin & Susan up. They run an art gallery/ studio/ store called "A Weaver's Yarn" in their home just outside the city limits.

They are both accomplished fiber artists -- everything from spinning, weaving and knitting, to tapestry, basketry and quilting. Susan also makes some pretty cool things from polymer clay. In addition to their art, they sell supplies and gifts and they give lessons.

Check out their website: http://www.aweaversyarn.com/

Don't Play With Your Food

After giving Milty considerable grief for playing with his food (egged on, of course, by his doting Aunt Dianne and her ever-present camera), Freddie can't resist sharing his birthday cake with the world!

Blue-Tongued Skinks

Otherwise known as my nephews, Fred & Milton Smith.

Taken on the front porch of the farm in Leslie, Michigan.

Gambling, Michigan Style

Shawn and I flew to Michigan this weekend to catch up with some far-flung members of the Miller clan.

We met my sister Judy, who lives in Rancho Cucamonga, California, at a little dive bar in Mason on Friday night. We were lured there by the promise of cold beer, hot wings, and Keno. None of us are any good at Keno (is anyone??), but we had better luck with the pull-tab lottery tickets. That top ticket won $100 -- enough to cover our losses AND pay the bar tab.

Not bad...
