Crockett Lee Kimbro

Shawn's been talking about getting a dog almost since I met him, and certainly since we moved to Maryland. He is fascinated by the fish and is genuinely affectionate toward the cats, but he wanted a pet who would love him unconditionally, follow him blindly, and respond to his commands enthusiastically. James and Lillian and a tank full of tropicals weren't cutting it.

Every time we had the puppy talk, however, Shawn hesitated. He wasn't sure if our lifestyles would support the commitment necessary for a dog. But after I stopped traveling and he stopped gigging and we started spending more time at home, he started believing we could manage a puppy.

On our way to brunch yesterday, he bought a Baltimore Sun and threw away all but the classfied section. After calling several breeders, he found a place on the Eastern Shore that had one ten-week-old male Chesapeake Bay Retriever available. We drove out to look at him, hedging all the way, but to no avail. It was love at first sight.

In case you were wondering, we named Crockett Lee after the county mayor of Shawn's boyhood home in Hawkins County, Tennessee. As soon as we saw his campaign signs dotting the roadsides around Mooresburg, Bean Station, and Big Hill this spring -- we assume that Mr. Lee is named for the famed mountineer and the confederate general -- we KNEW we had to name something after him!
