Happy birthday to me!

At Cookshop in NYC. Yummy!

New York Harbor

There aren't many things you can do for free in New York City. Riding the Staten Island Ferry is one of them.

If you don't want to deal with the lines and crowds, it's the easiest, best way to see the Statue of Liberty.

Shawn can never pass up the opportunity to get out near the water, so here we are!

Big Apple Birthday

Shawn and I came to New York for my birthday this year. We cashed in Amtrak points for our ride on the Acela, and hotel points for a free weekend in the Intercontinental. Not a bad way to travel...

We got half-price tickets to see West Side Story - one of my all-time favorites - last night. Dinner was a pizza at John's in Times Square. I like the one on Bleecker Street better, but it satisfied my craving for New York Pizza.
Got up this morning and - after making sure that everything was okay with Chelsea Clinton's wedding about 50 miles north of us - set out in search of adventure.

First stop: the Limelight market. As you can see from the photos, Limelight used to be a church. I knew it as a club, back in the 80s. More recently, it's been converted to a fancy food/retail marketplace. We went immediately to the top level for our morning coffee, and then worked our way back down among the shops.

Next up was a stop at the Union Square Farmer's Market, where we ogled the beautiful produce and wished that we had some way to bring all the goodies we saw back home with us.

We ate lunch at the Brazilian Coffee House - another favorite - on the corner of Union Square. The weather backed off a bit, so temperatures were only in the 80s and the humidity was under control.

Wind Storm Damage

It rained so hard this afternoon that I couldn't see the back fence from the porch. The wind blew so hard - local news said gusts were measured at 70 mph - that the tops of our 30-foot tall cottonwood trees bent over to the ground. During the storm, which lasted less than 10 minutes, we heard a couple of large cracks. Thunder, we thought.

Fallen tree, actually.

We're still amazed that it didn't damage the garage at all. Can hardly wait to see how much it's going to cost to clean it up!

Sunset at the Bridge

Shawn caught up with our old friend and realtor Paul at the Bay Bridge tonight. Looks like he was having a fine time!

Target Ships, off Smith Island

The Navy doesn't actually shoot real bullets at these ships any more, instead, pilots and ship captains use laser sites to practice targeting.

They also make pretty enticing targets for finding fish!

Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

Shawn & Mitch wanted to go fishing today, so I took Suzi and the boys to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michael's.

We love the CBMM, partly because it gives us an excuse to go to St. Michael's a few times a year. But mostly, because it does a very good job explaining the history and culture of the area that we call home.

Added bonus: it's a very kid-friendly destination, as these photos show.

Happy Belated Birthday to Fred!

Fred turned 12 on July 3.

We celebrated with cupcakes a few days late. I don't think he minded the wait too much.

Inner Harbor At Night

The lights of the Inner Harbor, as we motor back from dinner in Fell's Point.

Suzi and I chose to drive home, while the boys braved the waves and took the boat home. Shawn said Milton curled up on the bean bags and slept the entire way. Fred and Mitch stood watch, in case they encountered pirates. They made it home without incident.

The flag was still there...

The Inner Harbor, looking down from Federal Hill

To kill a little time waiting for Shawn to meet us by boat for dinner, we hiked up Federal Hill to learn a little Revolutionary history and take in some views of the city.
