One of the hazards of life in Washington, D.C. is the constant threat of violence. For the most part, we ignore the warnings and go about our business until something reminds us that our city is a target. Like today, when my lunch plans were interrupted by a "suspicious package" in Union Station. Though the main entrances and the streets around the Station were blocked, the authorities did not evacuate the building, shut down the train system, or even prevent people from coming and going through a back door -- which surprised me, given the number of police and firefighters on the scene.
Thankfully, it was a false alarm and only a minor inconvenience.
