Snow Geese

On the way to the Judge Yachts open house today, we pulled off into a farmer's field (sorry about the tire tracks!)
and took these pictures of a flock of migrating snow geese.

Brandi Carlile!

Of all the headliners on the cruise, Brandi Carlile was the one I was least familiar with.

On the advice of a couple friends, I downloaded two of her records before the cruise to get familiar with her songs. I liked what I heard, but it did nothing to prepare me for the supercharged energy of her live show. Fantastic.

After the cruise, Larkin Poe will be her opening act (along with the Indigo Girls - who were NOT on the cruise, but would have fit in perfectly) - for several dates.

Larkin Poe On The Pool Deck!

Larkin Poe's third show was on the pool deck in the afternoon of our last day at sea.

Where else can you see a show from a hot tub?

Larkin Poe In The Atrium!

Larkin Poe's second showcase was on the Atrium Stage, overlooking one of the big lobbies of the ship. Shawn and I watched the show from the 8th floor deck, and were able to watch the crowd from our bird's eye vantage.

We noticed that Steve Earle stopped by to watch them, and hung out for more than half the set. Very cool.

Lyle Lovett & Friends!

Lyle was very generous in sharing the stage with all his friends who were on the cruise.

He invited Robert Earl Keen up to sing "This Old Porch." They co-wrote this song when they were in college, and each has recorded it.

Tonight, they did Lyle's more mellow, wistful version. I'd love to see Lyle sing on REK's more no-hold's barred, good 'ole boy version.
Emmylou Harris sang harmony on "Walk Through The Bottom Land," a part she sang on the studio version of this song.
I was thrilled when he called Shawn Colvin to the stage to sing the harmony part on "North Dakota," probably my favorite Lyle Lovett song.

And to close out the show, everyone came back to sing a rousing chorus of "I'm Gonna Wait."

Without a doubt, best show of the cruise.

Lyle Lovett & His Large Band!

We got to choose which headliner we wanted to see twice. It was a hard decision, but I went with Lyle.

I think I made the right choice!

Robert Earl Keen! Again!

We caught the whole Robert Earl show tonight.

He's not a bad solo performer, but he really shines with his band. They're coming to the Birchmere soon, so hopefully, we'll catch up with 'em back home.

The Beach!

The water was warm, shallow, and crystal clear. My vacation photos look like beer ads!

The Dawn From The Shore In Costa Maya

The cruise ship port in Mahahual is pretty much the only game in town. There was another ship docked the same day we were there, so lots of activity in this little village.

Beachside Bar in Mexico

You're not drunk, you're just sitting on a swing!

Fishing In The Gulf of Mexico

It didn't take Shawn and Daniel long to find fish in the Gulf of Mexico - barracudas mostly.

Shawn writes about it on his website.

The View From Our Golf Cart

Costa Maya

Our second port of call was in Costa Maya, Mexico.

Rather than explore like we did in Belize, today we rented a golf cart and set off along the beach road to find a place for the boys to fish.

Daniel Jamming w/ Steve Earle!

After he finished his set, Steve Earle wandered over to the "British Pub" on the ship and sat in on an impromptu bluegrass jam.

Steve Earle!

Posing With Our Guide Before Catching The Water Taxi Back To The Ship

Rather than sign up for a (very expensive) shore excursion with the cruise line, we took our chances and hired a local guide. We hit the jackpot with Bert!
